Movie Night For Four

Not all your dinner parties have to be big formal occasions. And I love to do something unexpected for my relaxed parties. Lately we’ve had so much rain in KY — my normal summer parties outside have hit a dead end. Recently, I invited my girlfriends over and thought it would be so much fun to have a movie night with dinner. I set my coffee table and piled a bunch of pillows around it, grabbed some wine and popped in the whimsical movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

It’s Complicated with Meryl Streep was on the other day — the scene where the girls sit around her coffee table and eat pie is absolutely hilarious. Everything she makes in that film looks so incredible and I thought “Ok, I can do that!” It turned out to be such a hit that I’m already planning the next one.

Using the Film for Inspiration

To keep the vibe low key, I used an earthy palette of stoneware and Pomegranate’s Kalahari Red Lion Print. I thought the wood of the napkin ring and silverware went really well with the coffee table base as well.  I made Chicken Tikka Masala, primarily because everyone likes it and it complemented the movie well, which is set in India.

Movie Dinner Party

For floral pieces, I set them low so that everyone could see the TV and chat easily. Part of the reason I chose the film was because my guests had already seen it, so I knew we could chat through it. Try to keep in mind how you want the night to go. Consider choosing a one-plate course, a movie that doesn’t require full attention, etc.  I think my next one may be Breakfast at Tiffany’s; imagine the fun I could have with that theme!
